Chapter 2 Background on SDG 8 – Economic Growth and Work

The SDG number 8 is primarily about the sustained economic growth and ecent job opportunities for all. This includes reducing unemployment, improving labor conditions, and ensuring fair wages. Economic growth is often measured through indicators such as GDP per capita, employment rates, and productivity levels. Growth alone is not enough—jobs must also be stable, safe, and accessible. In many countries, rapid growth has not translated into equal opportunities, highlighting the need for inclusive economic policies. This chapter explores how economic systems function globally and why job quality matters just as much as job quantity.Government spending and war are closely connected to Sustainable Development Goal 8 because they shape how resources are allocated within an economy. High military spending can takeaway funding from investments in infrastructure, education, and the overall creation of jobs which are essential for sustainable growth. This connects directly to SDG 8 because war disrutps labor markets, destroys the economy/businesses, and increases unemployment making it harder to have a stable unemployment. Defense spending may create short term jobs it often does not lead to long term success which we see from the data from Our World in Data about Military personnel and spending.
