The surge in global military spending dominating today’s headlines is not just a defense policy story it is a development story, and it speaks directly to the ambitions laid out in both Sustainable Development Goal 8 and Sustainable Development Goal 16.

SDG 8 calls for sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full employment, and decent work for all. When the United States proposes a 1.5 trillion dollar defense budget represting a large budget and the economic effects are significant. On one hand, defense spending can show certain sectors of the economy, creating jobs in manufacturing, technology, and logistics. On the other hand, when such spending is financed through increases as analysts warn this latest proposal would add nearly $6 trillion to the national debt over a decade. This would be a long-term economic consequences can undermine the very growth and stability SDG 8 is designed to protect.

The connection to SDG 16 is perhaps even more direct. SDG 16 envisions governments that are accountable, transparent, and oriented toward justice and inclusive institutions. A Government can pursue strength while not having the foundations for economic stability and integrity that its own citzens demand. SDG 8 and 16 together remind us that national is not to be measured by defense budgets and weapon systems but a heathy economy that provides fairness in any capacity to its people.
